Vince McMahon, owner of the World Wrestling Federation wanted to create a football league that was tougher than the NFL. The Xtreme Football League, a rough-and-tumble version of the game that promoted no rules and no mercy also featured no talent.

Apparently having players who are actually good at football is an important part of attracting fans.

The XFL was a one season and done product.
