McDonald’s’ decision to diversify by introducing McPizza in the late ‘80s didn’t end well for the company. Someone can’t have thought this out very well, because the pizzas didn’t even squeeze through the drive-thru windows. Despite the poor reception, many franchises were forced to keep the product on their menus, in a desperate attempt to recoup the $50,000 that had been spent on pizza ovens.
The idea behind McPizza was to expand the chain’s dinner menu and challenge competitors such as Pizza Hut. It didn’t work, however, and the problem was compounded by the fact that pizza takes a lot longer to make than a burger, when McDonald’s customers are used to speed.
