We don’t report a lot of entertainment news at Business Pundit but it’s incredibly hard to avoid Straight Outta Compton because it’s business plan was viral marketing gold.
Led by rap icon Dr. Dre, the story of his group N.W.A. was highlighted all throughout Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and other social channels for the last several months.
Experts said the movie would likely take in $25 million during its opening weekend. Instead, Straight Outta Compton managed to pull down $24.2 million in just its first day. The movie even managed $4.96 million during its Thursday night preview screenings.
Analysts now believe Straight Outta Compton will end the weekend closer to $60 million.
The movie has been boosted by positive reviews and excellent word of mouth. The two-and-a-half hour R-rated biopic is handicapped in part by its rating which makes its very quick $60 million haul even more impressive.
Throw in the fact that Straight Outta Compton only cost $29 million to produce and it’s an even more impressive take for Universal Studios.
