Amazon Prime sold 3 million subscriptions right before Christmas

Amazon Prime

Christmas shoppers waited until the last minute to buy gifts in 2015 and that was great news for Amazon.

The e-commerce giant said it sold 3 million Prime memberships in the week before Christmas. Customers flocked to the service which offers free two-day shipping.

While Amazon has never released total Prime membership numbers, the company has claimed “tens of millions” of Prime customers worldwide.

Along with free two-day shipping, Prime customers also receive free access to streaming videos and a variety of other benefits for just $99 per year.

The company also announced that a record number of movies were watched on Prime in 2015 and that holiday viewing hours had doubled from last year.

Amazon says the most watched series was “The Man in the HIgh Castle,” an Amazon drama that imagines what would have happened if the United States lost World War II.

Increasing Prime memberships have been occuring even after the company raised the cost of the service from $79 to $99 annually.
