If more white collar jobs really do go overseas, workers can always fall back on flipping burgers right? Well, maybe not. McDonald's is testing a machine that will flip the burgers itself. This just makes me wonder how long it will be before the first totally automated restaurant opens. Imagine the labor savings of having only one or two employees, who just monitor the machines and clean the place up at night. I'm sure someone will try this idea in my lifetime. But I think it will fail initially. Customers still value some face-to-face interaction. Of course, if you could reduce the cost of a burger, fries and drink to under a buck, they may value that even more.
