Becker on Young Black Men and Drugs

Gary Becker has some interesting commentary on the wage gap between black men and other races. His argument is that poor schooling leaves many young black men with poor job options, which causes them to sell drugs, since it pays better than anything else they could do. As a result, no one wants to marry them, so many of their children grow up without fathers, and the cycle perpetuates itself. Becker's solution is two part: better schooling, and drug legalization.

Myrdal showed that, as of the early 1940s, blacks were segregated in all regions of the U.S., especially in the South, where most lived. Blacks fell short of whites in education, income, health, housing, and opportunities. They were generally not fairly treated by the justice system and effectively could not vote in much of the South. Fortunately, in all these dimensions, African Americans have made enormous strides toward greater equality with white Americans.
