Barry Ritholtz has a nice pair of posts on Atlitunes, which rents CDs or DVDs, and DVD station, which rents DVDs for a buck. Maybe the entertainment industry has finally realized that listening to consumers is a good way to go.

UPDATE: Barry pointed out that I misunderstood the post. Altitunes does not rent anything (they just sell), which brings us back to the issue of why the hell are CDs so expensive? Maybe I should say the movie industry is starting to get it and the music industry is still flailing about trying to hold on to an old-school business model.
