Donald Trump has chosen Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg as his next target. The GOP presidential hopeful is angry over Zuckerberg’s support of more H-1B visas that would become available to skilled foreign workers.
Donald Trump wants employers to pay higher H-1B fees to higher a foreign employee while Zuckerberg wants to eliminate the barrier to entry. Trump also wants to have tech jobs offered to unemployed Americans before they can be filled by workers with H-1B visas.
“This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program. Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Senator, Marco Rubio, has a bill to triple H-1Bs that would decimate women and minorities,” Trump wrote in his immigration plan.
Mark Zuckerberg started Fwd.us to help push the immigration issue along with lobbying reform. Also taking part in that initiative are Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Yahoo CO Marissa Mayer.
Trump claims there are plenty of unemployed American tech workers with degrees in science, technology, engineering and math, known as STEM. The Census Bureau confirms that 74% of people who hold a STEM bachelor’s degree have a job outside of those fields. It should be noted that many of those people have high-paying jobs in law, health care, and other fields.
Workers who earn a STEM degree earn a median income of between $69,700 and $92,900, depending on their field of study. STEM graduates have an unemployment rate of just 3% compared to the national average of 8%.
