Everything I Know About Business, I Learned From Rock-n-Roll

cparock.jpg

Last night I ventured downtown to hear the band The Accountants play. The four band members all have day jobs, and two of them really are CPAs. They have original songs related to work like "Slacker," "Suck Up," and "Keepin' Up With The Jonses." They were pretty good.

I got to thinking about their songs and wondered, what are the best rock songs that either are, or could be, about business? Here is my list.

General Business
Taking Care of Business - Bachman Turner Overdrive

Entrepreneurship
Start Me Up - Rolling Stones
Stayin' Alive - The BeeGees
Authority Song - John Cougar Mellencamp
I'm a Believer - The Monkees

Accounting
Money - Pink Floyd
Highway to Hell - AC/DC (this one goes out to Enron)

Getting Things Done
MoneyTalks - AC/DC

Strategy
The Times They Are A Changin' - Bob Dylan
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Bachman Turner Overdrive

Fountains of Wayne have at least a couple of songs tied to the working world.

“Hey Julie” and “Bright Future in Sales” come to mind immediately.

I’m 42. Having spent most of my youth in rock bands, some old bandmates and I have toyed with the idea of a truth-in-advertising band name for a reunion: http://www.WashedUpDicks.com

Whaddya think? Given the number of geezer bands who fit this description, I’m surprised the url was available.

    How about Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm!”
