I think virtual worlds are looking for their killer application like early Internet.
One application is presenting new product or concepts and for this in our experience Lively is much better than Second Life.

Thanks for providing this roundup, Linden Lab continues to improve the Second Life mainland experience. See: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/08/05/the-future-of-the-second-life-mainland/

I think some of the competitors may be the virtual worlds that are easier to access and require no download like Habbo.com and Yoowalk.com. These flash based sites seem to be less complicated and a good transition for those unfamiliar with virtual worlds.

Good article. I like your comparison. I also agree Lively has much improvement to be done from it's current Beta version until it can cause trouble for 3D worlds. Considering Lively doesn't really have a "world" yet, nor does it have an economy (although they are working on it it looks like), it is still getting a lot of visitors just from it's "new" hype and being from Google.

As for monthly hits at Second Life you can try http://www.quantcast.com/secondlife.com
