This is more in response to Nicole Kipps but still relevant. I find that there is a market for quality content, clients are happy to pay for it and they understand the value of it. And not all content is directly related to an ad-buy.

Sadly, paying for high quality content is becoming less and less important. Look at a job board for content writers ... most of the jobs, when you work out what the pay is vs. how much time it takes to write a quality post, are pretty much offering minimum wage. And when you have a minimum wage job, you get a minimum wage writer. Maybe the content will decrease, maybe there will just be fewer sites. Right now it is a bit oversaturated and fragmented. The competition for writers is high and the pay is low, which isn't a recipe for quality.

My source reports that the "marketing budget" (the sum spent by businesses to find and grow customers) exceeds a trillion dollars. It has grown substantially over the last thirty years.
The ad spend is a fraction of that (less than 30 per cent). And while the ad spend has grown, the "ad" share of the marketing dollar has shrunk over those same three decades.

The reason? According to those who pay the ad bills "the ROI of most ad buys is disappointing." So ad buyers defect and find other ways besides traditional ads to spend their marketing dollars.

I too have asked the same question on my blog. Though we all hail it, I have commented on the dangerous precedent being set by the continuous move of the music industry towards free. I even go as far as suggesting that free may ultimately hinder the evolution of the web.

Rob, a well thought out piece as ever. Perhaps the model will move more towards selling selected information. For example 90% of the information is free/ad supported and the remaining 10%, i.e. the cream will be sold to those that need the latest/fullest/most detailed information.
