Here’s a unique tech pairing. Lady Gaga, Intel, Vox Media, and Re/Code have teamed up to fight back against online harassment.
The tech companies have teamed up with Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way Foundation’ to form an initiative called Hack Harassment. The program is aimed at providing “safer, more inclusive online experiences.”
“Online harassment is pervasive and can be vicious,” said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in a statement.
“We need to remember that behind every device, game, sensor or network is a real person with real feelings and real needs for safety,” he added.
The four organizations have conducted a survey to better understand the tech industry’s relationship with online harassment.
Nearly all (84%) of those surveyed believe there is real-life risk and emotional impact for online harassment victims.
More than half (60% ) of tech professionals don’t believe the tech industry is doing enough to prevent online harassment.
To address the issue a series of hackathons will be hosted to promote awareness of online harassment and to increase accountability.
Following GamerGate the organizers of SXSW were forced to cancel several events, that organization plans to host an online harassment summit at its event in March.
