Mark Zuckerberg announces daughter’s Chinese name

Mark Zuckerberg gives daughter a Chinese name

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the opportunity to speak in Mandarin with his wife Priscilla Chan on Monday as they wished the world a happy Lunar New Year and revealed their daughter’s Chinese name.

In a video post Saturday, the couple said this Lunar New Year was especially meaningful because they selected Max’s Chinese name.

“Chen, after her mother’s family name, and Mingyu represents our hope for a brighter tomorrow for the world,” Zuckerberg said.

Chinese names are carefully chosen because many people believe it will help guide the child’s future.

When Zuckerberg and Chan announced Max’s birth late last year, they said they would donate 99% of their Facebook shares over their lifetimes to efforts to make the world better through education, medicine and Internet access.

Max’s new Chinese name represents the couple’s hopes for the future. “ming” means brights while “yu” means university.

Happy Lunar New Year from Priscilla, Max and me! In the Year of the Monkey, I hope you and all your loved ones find happiness, health and good fortune.

Her English — Maxima, or Max for short — was chosen for members of Zuckerberg’s family.

Several years ago Mark Zuckerberg announced his plans to learn Mandarin, a goal he achieved very quickly. Facebook’s CEO now regularly gives presentations while speaking the language.
