Mark Zuckerberg announces plan to fight Zika virus

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced his company’s plan to help fight back against the Zika virus.

Facebook has partnered with the non-profit Abrasco Divulga in Brazil as part of an effort the company is rolling out across Latin America.

The Zika Virus has now been reported in more than 20 countries. The virus is most specifically dangerous for pregnant women, having been linked to brain damage in their babies.

At this time, the virus which is carried by mosquitoes, is not treatable with medicines and the virus can’t be prevented with vaccinations.

The virus has become a big enough concern that the US Pentagon announced this week that it will allow
pregnant family members of active-duty personnel and civilian Defense Department employees to be re-assigned if they are in areas affected by the Zika virus

Details as to how affected beneficiaries can request a transfer have not been released, but a U.S. Southern Command officials said that one expecting service member has already been relocated.
