Powerball jackpot grows to a record breaking $800 million

Powerball worth 800 million dollars

The Powerball jackpot has grown to a record shattering $800 million in the United States.

The previous record for a US lottery was $656 million. That prize was awarded in a 2012 MegaMillions game.

The current record-breaking lottery topped $700 million on Thursday after a winning ticket was not discovered. It was the 18th drawing without a winner.

This jackpot first broke into the top 10 largest jackpots ranking last weekend, when it hit $400 million. As the lottery winnings total has soared, so to has the number of people hoping to win it big.

The current jackpot has been growing since November 7 and is played 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

If no winner is chosen during Saturday’s drawing, there is the very real possibility that the next drawing will be the first in the US to feature a $1 billion prize.
