The really sad thing about the digital camera lag is that Sony partly brought it upon themselves. SLR owners can be fiercely loyal because of the hundreds (even thousands) of dollars invested in their gear. But when Sony bought out Minolta's camera line, they rebranded the Maxxum as Alpha. I haven't seen them make much attempt to educate the public about the continuity, however. I'd seriously consider buying out someone's aging Minolta rig that's been gathering dust (since they've switched to Canon or Nikon in exasperation) just so I'd have a complete setup just waiting for me to get a digital body from Sony. They'd be at least toward the middle if they were selling Maxxum digital SLRs.
