I found this article a long time after it was written, about 4 years after it was written actually, but I think that you’ve got something here. Google will succumb to the genius of crowds, but not because they’re innovating in the wrong direction, but because despite what they say about not doing evil, they are grossly overcharging advertisers and controlling access to everyone’s websites for their own purposes, and there will be a backlash. When, and how long, and from that quarter? Let them worry about that.

A riskier strategy would be to stand still and do nothing though. The real diffuculty that they’ll have in the future though is redefining the public’s perception of their USP.

A company will succeed in diverse business areas only if it is sufficiently decentralized for there to exist people below the very top level who are empowered to make *business* decisions (as opposed to purely technical decisions, sales decisions,etc.) Founder-driven companies are notoriously poor at making this transition.
