The Chicago Cubs aren’t just the best team in baseball through 30 games, they are the best team in the history of major league baseball through 30.
We’re only a little over a month into the season but the Cubbies are already holding onto a run differential that is unheard of in the MLB.
The Cubs have outscored their opponents by 102 runs while commanding a 24-6 record.
In all of major league baseball history no team has outscored their opponents by more than 44 runs.
The 1927 Yankees, by far considered one of the greatest teams in history, were outscoring their opponents by 2.4 runs per game. The Cubs are outscoring teams by 3.4 runs per game.
If the Cubs could keep up with this pace they would outscore their opponents by 551 runs for the entire season. That would be 140 runs more than any team has pulled off in the last 25 years.
Even if the Cubs slow down, they are still likely to become one of the best regular season teams in MLB history.
There’s plenty of reason for early celebration in Wrigleyville, but for now Cubs fans will hold their breath and just hope the Cubbies can break their curse and survive through October.
