What is the future of the design industry? I'm not sure, but I think it will lead down an interesting path. Designers tend to be multidisciplinary, while most companies recruit those with a narrow focus. Hence the trend by employees is towards specialization and building experience. Nothing looks better on a resume than 20 years of doing the same thing. Someday soon I think recruiters will make the move from just talking about hiring for talent and training for skill, and actually doing that. The commoditization of many technologies and the emergence of design as a competitive advantage will necessitate a new approach.
