Great article, shocked it was written in 2006. It's 2009 and I see Tivo's lifespan shrinking if they don't quickly role out licensing agreements with ALL cable companies. Apparently they have one with Comcast but the service is not yet available to Comcast customers. TimeWarner has recently changed some channels to SVD such that no Tivo box can read them without a special piece of equipment called a tuner. Series 2 Tivos cannot read these channels, no matter what.

My Series 2 is virtually obsolete. I love the Tivo user interface, but Timewarner is the only cable provider in my area. Hence, my $150/year Tivo service subscription is no longer worth the money. And why would anyone upgrade to Tivo HD if it will not completely work with their cable service? They would not. Tivo needs to license their service as a premium option that cable providers offer their customers. Tivo needs to get out of the box-top business and into the software and user-interface licensing business.
