Tinder is known as a dating and hookup app among the masses, but it’s serving a different purpose among many college students these days. It has become a friendship app.
In a recent survey of 200 college students, 73% ranked Tinder as their favorite dating app, followed by Bumble (13%) and OkCupid (10%).
The survey, conducted by college jobs startup WayUp, asked students about their dating habits.
58% of Tinder users said they have never gone on a date with the app. More than half (53%) say they are using dating apps to find friends, and 27% said they are looking for a significant other. Only 20% said they use Tinder in search of a hookup.
Tinder says 50% of its users are in the 18-24 age group, making it a very popular app among college students.
Several college students have questioned the results, saying their friends still use the app for hookups and that they are trying to save face when asked about their true intentions.
In all honestly, Tinder doesn’t really care how the app is being used, as long as users continue to subscribe to Tinder Plus, its paid premium service. That service is most likely used by subscribers older than 22, according to analysts.
