Why We Love the Donald: A Success Story in Quotes

If I think about it too much, I really don’t like Donald Trump. And I shouldn’t. But I do. He’s boastful, arrogant, and sexist. He’s also what many consider to be the epitome of the American Dream. He worked his way up in the real estate business, taking the education his father gave him and creating an empire all his own. While his personal traits may irk you, there’s no denying this guy knows business, as evidenced by his words along the journey.

Trump’s Words of Wisdom

Here’s my favorite Trump-ism. I couldn’t find it credited to him anywhere, and I’m sure it’s as old as the hills, but he’s the first person I ever heard say it:

Watch the pennies, the dollars will follow.

To me this is the business equivalent to God is in the details. Keep focused on the little stuff, and the big stuff takes care of itself. Remember this when you’re just starting out in a venture. Learn to be grateful for all the tiny income that trickles in. Your positive attitude will fuel you to keep going.

These two go together:

I don’t make deals for the money. I’ve got enough, much more than I’ll ever need. I do it to do it.

If you’re interested in ‘balancing’ work and pleasure, stop trying to balance them. Instead make your work more pleasurable.

Wouldn’t it be great to work from this place? The key is to know yourself so well that you are able to pinpoint your perfect work. You look at someone like Trump and realize how a self-important attitude contributes to wild success in business. It’s not that you have to be arrogant to make the deal, but you absolutely must possess a keen interest in yourself in order to uncover your most valuable strengths.

I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. That’s where the fun is.

If only Trump had a funny little beard and a soothing sort of way about him, he could have written a whole book based on this quote, packaged it as spiritual enlightenment, and rode the Oprah wave to millions. But why would he? Trump gets out there and does it every day. I like the word exclusively in there. He plans for the future by an exclusive focus on what’s going on right now. Who wouldn’t enjoy more success with that philosophy?

Isn’t it: That’s where* the fun is. :P
    Thanks for the read.

  • Ivanka, his daughter, is no slouch either! I recently read a piece in Forbes.com that talked with her about her plans to stay with the company and develop it to an even larger presence in the hotel business, including Egypt. The Donald’s aphorisms must be working for the family, and now maybe everyone can benefit! Thanks for this short but worthy article.
