Microsoft Windows 10 was released for free today and the very first reviews of the company’s new operating system are in.
The new OS is not only a big upgrade from Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, it’s also free.
David Pogue at Yahoo loves the upgrade, writing, “You really are going to love Windows 10. You’ll almost certainly want to upgrade your computers to it, especially since it’s free,” and that “if you’re a PC veteran, then you’ll recognize Windows 10: It’s pretty much Windows 7, with Cortana, nicer typography, and a few new features.”
Tom Warren at The Verge also loves the simplicity of the new OS. “Windows 10 has some great additions over Windows 8 and Windows 7, and it really feels like a good blend of the familiarity of Windows 7 and some of the new features of Windows 8. It’s not irritating to use, and you don’t need a tutorial to find the Start menu. It just works like you’d expect.”
Overall reviews have focused on several important upgrades.
- The Start menu: Microsoft users were incredibly disgruntled when Windows 8 removed the Start Button. In Windows 8.1 Microsoft returned the feature but didn’t really offer anything new. This time around the Start Menu is back and it allows users to customize the button with various apps and other PC settings features.
- A New Interface: Flat buttons, a sleek UI, and a design that is easy to navigate. Reviewers are already praising Microsoft for a system that makes the PC look pretty again.
- Cortana: No surprise here. Microsoft has been pushing the “personal assistant” features of Cortana for more than a year and now early reviews are praising the feature for its ease of use. Cortana can learn your preferences and learn your habits.
Some reviews have noted that there are most certainly some bugs with Windows 10, but they also acknowledge that most of those bugs will likely be worked out in the next few months.
