Microsoft released Bing, its new search engine, today. If you have doubts about the new product, you’re not alone. Here’s one good reason to hate Bing.

The gripe is a non sequitur. First, most Linux distros ship with X Windows. Second, many users would legitimately need to search for Linux and Windows (or Microsoft) in a common search for interoperativity purposes. Microsoft’s search engine may see more of those searches since (on the Windows side) it does make sense to look for a supported solution and users could reason that Microsoft’s search engine would index MSDN, KB and TechNet articles higher (thus, potentially reducing the time necessary to find a supported solution).

I don’t think it’s an out and out reason to hate Bing, but I think it’s telling. Microsoft will push their agenda first and foremost before taking into account what their customers really need. I have no doubt that the above search results aren’t coincidental and it should be interesting to perform other searches and see how Microsoft pushes themselves to the front. What’s more is that this is a clever marketing tactic rather than a reason to hate them.

It wasn’t the search results that I necessarily find telling, it’s the COMPLETELY OVER-THE-TOP and UNNECESSARY LARGE background image. When I use a search engine, I’m trying to find some information, not view hi-res photos. It’s like the moderately cool-kid trying to be the way cool kid by wearing all kinds of name-brand logos, but just ends up being ridiculous in the end.

That’s why you should dislike Bing.

In regards to John’s comments, are you kidding? The top 3 branching searches are “windows”, “microsoft” and “vista” before ANYTHING else? Vista is the most ludicrous of all, and it comes before “commands” or “download”?!? You are simply fooling yourself if you believe this is anything other than a flat out attempt to stack the deck for their own purposes at the expense of the user experience. It’s their engine and they can do what they want, but don’t make excuses for them, call it like it is man.

The background photo is quite in place. Some days I go to Google even when I don’t have any business there just to see whether they have a Doodle that day. The site’s front page is otherwise quite simple.

Every time I search for something on there a stupid adult friend finder ad pops up .Bing sucks and is so LAMe.

  8. Laura B's Gravatar Comment by Laura B on June 8th, 2009 at 11:25 am

I also HATE BING – nothing but continuous popups – something called Local.com is always on the screen when I try to do a search – info received from Bing just leads to ads, not actual information requested – it is nothing but a commercial billboard – I am switching to Yahoo or whatever just to get away from Bing !!

  9. David's Gravatar Comment by David on June 8th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

All those damn pop up adds and now they have invaded the NY times.

Most of the people here are haters and idiots… popups from local.com? Dude, clean your PC from spyware and go blame whoever created your anti-virus (I know you’d say Microsoft now :) )

Honestly, bing looks nice. Has some nice features. Anyone with a broadband connection can’t be that frustrated with having an image loaded. C’mon, it takes maybe a few seconds, if that, and reloads basically instantly each subsequent time. Is anyone really in such a hurry to search that waiting those few seconds will make that much of a difference? I’m guessing 99.99% of the time, no.

That said, I’m sticking with google. I don’t really see a need to switch. Bing isn’t that much better, if it’s better at all. So why bother having to consciously switch that already ingrained habit of going to google.com? That’s the problem with bing. It really doesn’t offer anything so spectacular that lazy asses like me will consciously make the effort to re-wire my brain to think bing.com before google.com. Same thing with cuil.com (remember them?)

If anything, I’ll (maybe) add bing to my list of alternative websites to check out if google.com doesn’t give me the results I want.

Lets not be too hard on Bing, i think it may actually be quite good. Also has anyone tried typing “Bing” into google? According to its search predictions “Bing” is not shown in the top searches which i find hard to believe. So Google are at it as well.

  14. Dave's Gravatar Comment by Dave on June 17th, 2009 at 10:10 am

I personally don’t trust Google with my information since they do record a lot of stuff. They are probably sending live feeds of everything we do from Chrome, Google, Gmail, etc straight to the US government. They even admited they comply with the government. And with the vast amount of information their system collects for “ad” pourpose its crazy.

Do you think this is a fair?

Typing BING on google here in Italy,
They say….we are sorry but this search could be a spyware if you want to proceed please type a name below and go forward.

So, please, be open mind to judge all the pie and not only start with the battle linux/windows.

    Thanks

I simply hate the damn search engine. i am mad that my internet explorer makes actually need to type in another site to search on because if I want to search on the main page it automatically does Bing! It clutters the page with alot of uneccessary pages. I hate that. Sometimes the stuff doesn’t have anything to do with my topic. I think they should stop this search engine or at least give me the option to take it off of my internet explorer.

  17. emi's Gravatar Comment by emi on June 30th, 2009 at 11:13 am

i hate bing, simply because when i type in a defined search, say “anything basically in quotes”, i’m most likely to fine something, or what i want, on google than on Bing!

  19. Darren's Gravatar Comment by Darren on July 8th, 2009 at 7:01 am

I’ve never gone to the site by choice but was forced to look at search results for the actual domain name I typed in 3 times before I actually got there. When something is forced down your throat your immediate reaction is to cough it up and spit it out.

I hate bing. I got a new laptop and it has bing as an automatic toolbar and the only reason i keep it on is because it has a quick link to msn which is my email carrier (hotmail). I typed in how to clear bing search history and got a larger variety of crap than google. At least on google toolbar, the history was easy to clear. And I dont know what ya’ll’s problem is but when i google bing I have a link to bing, news articles on it and websites about bing, so get your computer checked or something, and why would you be worried about the government checking. Unless you searched something that might be illeagal and make lose your court case… you should be safe. I’m sure gov. has everthing wired, even bing, just out looking for predators not if your searching something innocent.

I hate Bing because when I type in my website name, wildworldphoto in its Search box, my website does not come up at all in its results despite having submitted it to Bing. When I type it into Google’s search box, it is Number 2!! Even if I type in wildworldphoto.net it is not listed in Bing at all, but it is listed number 1 on Google!! Bing sucks in my opinion.

I bought a laptop that came with Bing as my default search and I hate it. I want my yahoo back. Well I did get yahoo on my browser but Bing is still there looking at me with disdain. I think it knows I tried to kill it.

Anyway, I tried Pauls suggestion for deleting Bing and I can’t do step 5-it looks nothing like that on my screen. What I did do was delete it from the list in my internet options. Also there is no arrow next to the magnifying glass for Bing. So I guess I will have to live with that.
