One Reason to Hate Bing

Microsoft released Bing, its new search engine, today. If you have doubts about the new product, you’re not alone. Here’s one good reason to hate Bing.

The gripe is a non sequitur. First, most Linux distros ship with X Windows. Second, many users would legitimately need to search for Linux and Windows (or Microsoft) in a common search for interoperativity purposes. Microsoft’s search engine may see more of those searches since (on the Windows side) it does make sense to look for a supported solution and users could reason that Microsoft’s search engine would index MSDN, KB and TechNet articles higher (thus, potentially reducing the time necessary to find a supported solution).

I don’t think it’s an out and out reason to hate Bing, but I think it’s telling. Microsoft will push their agenda first and foremost before taking into account what their customers really need. I have no doubt that the above search results aren’t coincidental and it should be interesting to perform other searches and see how Microsoft pushes themselves to the front. What’s more is that this is a clever marketing tactic rather than a reason to hate them.

  3. Troy's Gravatar Comment by Troy on June 1st, 2009 at 4:12 pm

It wasn’t the search results that I necessarily find telling, it’s the COMPLETELY OVER-THE-TOP and UNNECESSARY LARGE background image. When I use a search engine, I’m trying to find some information, not view hi-res photos. It’s like the moderately cool-kid trying to be the way cool kid by wearing all kinds of name-brand logos, but just ends up being ridiculous in the end.

That’s why you should dislike Bing.

  4. Terry Howard's Gravatar Comment by Terry Howard on June 1st, 2009 at 6:58 pm

In regards to John’s comments, are you kidding? The top 3 branching searches are “windows”, “microsoft” and “vista” before ANYTHING else? Vista is the most ludicrous of all, and it comes before “commands” or “download”?!? You are simply fooling yourself if you believe this is anything other than a flat out attempt to stack the deck for their own purposes at the expense of the user experience. It’s their engine and they can do what they want, but don’t make excuses for them, call it like it is man.

  5. John's Gravatar Comment by John on June 2nd, 2009 at 9:21 am

The background photo is quite in place. Some days I go to Google even when I don’t have any business there just to see whether they have a Doodle that day. The site’s front page is otherwise quite simple.

I also HATE BING – nothing but continuous popups – something called Local.com is always on the screen when I try to do a search – info received from Bing just leads to ads, not actual information requested – it is nothing but a commercial billboard – I am switching to Yahoo or whatever just to get away from Bing !!

  9. David's Gravatar Comment by David on June 8th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

All those damn pop up adds and now they have invaded the NY times.

Honestly, bing looks nice. Has some nice features. Anyone with a broadband connection can’t be that frustrated with having an image loaded. C’mon, it takes maybe a few seconds, if that, and reloads basically instantly each subsequent time. Is anyone really in such a hurry to search that waiting those few seconds will make that much of a difference? I’m guessing 99.99% of the time, no.

That said, I’m sticking with google. I don’t really see a need to switch. Bing isn’t that much better, if it’s better at all. So why bother having to consciously switch that already ingrained habit of going to google.com? That’s the problem with bing. It really doesn’t offer anything so spectacular that lazy asses like me will consciously make the effort to re-wire my brain to think bing.com before google.com. Same thing with cuil.com (remember them?)

If anything, I’ll (maybe) add bing to my list of alternative websites to check out if google.com doesn’t give me the results I want.

Lets not be too hard on Bing, i think it may actually be quite good. Also has anyone tried typing “Bing” into google? According to its search predictions “Bing” is not shown in the top searches which i find hard to believe. So Google are at it as well.

  14. Dave's Gravatar Comment by Dave on June 17th, 2009 at 10:10 am

I personally don’t trust Google with my information since they do record a lot of stuff. They are probably sending live feeds of everything we do from Chrome, Google, Gmail, etc straight to the US government. They even admited they comply with the government. And with the vast amount of information their system collects for “ad” pourpose its crazy.

Do you think this is a fair?

Typing BING on google here in Italy,
They say….we are sorry but this search could be a spyware if you want to proceed please type a name below and go forward.

So, please, be open mind to judge all the pie and not only start with the battle linux/windows.

    Thanks

I simply hate the damn search engine. i am mad that my internet explorer makes actually need to type in another site to search on because if I want to search on the main page it automatically does Bing! It clutters the page with alot of uneccessary pages. I hate that. Sometimes the stuff doesn’t have anything to do with my topic. I think they should stop this search engine or at least give me the option to take it off of my internet explorer.

I typed in how to clear bing search history and got a larger variety of crap than google. At least on google toolbar, the history was easy to clear. And I dont know what ya’ll’s problem is but when i google bing I have a link to bing, news articles on it and websites about bing, so get your computer checked or something, and why would you be worried about the government checking. Unless you searched something that might be illeagal and make lose your court case… you should be safe. I’m sure gov. has everthing wired, even bing, just out looking for predators not if your searching something innocent.

I hate Bing because when I type in my website name, wildworldphoto in its Search box, my website does not come up at all in its results despite having submitted it to Bing. When I type it into Google’s search box, it is Number 2!! Even if I type in wildworldphoto.net it is not listed in Bing at all, but it is listed number 1 on Google!! Bing sucks in my opinion.

I bought a laptop that came with Bing as my default search and I hate it. I want my yahoo back. Well I did get yahoo on my browser but Bing is still there looking at me with disdain. I think it knows I tried to kill it.

Anyway, I tried Pauls suggestion for deleting Bing and I can’t do step 5-it looks nothing like that on my screen. What I did do was delete it from the list in my internet options. Also there is no arrow next to the magnifying glass for Bing. So I guess I will have to live with that.

Everybody was crying out for something differfent and Google filled that space, Innovative and frsh.. MS just steal a good idea and make it suck.

If you search with Bing you’re missing out on half the Net.. (some crap I agree)

No, “Bingrules”. No one has responded because you’re retarded, and there is no reason to have a gunfight with someone who lacks ammunition.
Also, you turned your argument away from the subject (which was a debate about whether or Bing is a decent search engine or NOT, into a conservative diatribe against liberalism), and you began to crazy-rave. What a shocker. Didn’t see that one coming, you punk-ass loon. Why don’t you go back to your school campus, and pick on all those kids who are gonna grow up to make a lot more money than you are, gonna marry a lot better quality of women than you will, and who are gonna do a lot more important things in life than you are ever going to even imagine doing? Go on and get about your business of being a lame, bitter “coulda-been”, while your peers (especially the ones you disdain so much) go on to better, more productive lives. You’re a hateful, ugly turd.
No, wait. Ignore me. Go tune your radio to Rush Lumphog’s B.S. channel, and let that fat, drug-addicted liar give you some excuse to feel like you have some justification for your worthless existence. Then you can come back here and insult decent people in the sure and certain knowlege that your god approves of your willing ignorance.
Nobody replied because you’re not worth replying to. I only responded because I’m trying to speak above your waterheaded ignorance; I’m actually talking to the other idiots who agree with your stupid misconceptions. You all know that the world would be a better place if you could just murder everyone who disaqrees with your filthy ideology. We used to call you people “Nazis”, but that’s no longer politically-correct. Now we just have to call you “conservatives”. And hope for the best.

“bing rules”. The worst kind of idiot. A fool with a keyboard and an internet connection. If he and his kind had their way, nobody would have the ability to argue with him, and his naked retardation.

Nothing but love for ya, you waste of DNA!

At my age I hate it when things are forced on me. I do not need to see the BING site when I get out of Hotmail. If they want to take on the market let them prove that they are better not force it on their users. I would love to find a way to get rid of the automatic thing. There must a f…… A…. behing this. This is not how to gain market.

first of all, nothing is being forced on you. if you have msn you get bing because its microsot. (microsoft rules).if you get a pc you get bing on it. so nothing is forced on YOU. YOU force it on YOURSELF. so basically i’m right. and buy the way microsoft has 11% of stock market. you dont know anything cause your just a kid. yes i will say i am a kid but i know a lot about microsoft.why? because both my parents work for microsoft. microsoft DOES care about the costumers. i would know because my dad goes on really long bussiness trips just to meet with them. and he takes them out to eat and gives them free stuff. and people, there is no need to use fould language. using foul language doesn’t solve any problems.

first of all I noticed bing brought up a lawyers website when i searched a type of bird. second the toolbar is pre-installed on windows 7 so it is forced third bing is copied its no different from google except for the fact that bing sucks and I did research and only 16% of the people that use bing use the filter features and only 8% use the extra features its not that different telling by those results

  77. so sick of bing's Gravatar Comment by so sick of bing on July 29th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

first of all, to “fuck off”, who cares if you used bing from when you were born. obviously you can’t even speak like an educated human being so the way you were raised is probably not helping your argument at all. you’re just clearly full of yourself…like bing. and lot’s of people’s dads are pricks, you’re nothing special.

anywhoo, I’m just sick of how bing pushed it’s way into everything. Now I find it everywhere on MSN pages and it’s just annoying. Also, I used to like to read the slideshows on MSN.com where it has a picture and tells you something interesting….but with bing it’s all like “this person was famous for their arrest!” and you have to click on the link to find out what the eff they’re talking about, and it doesn’t even take you to the answer, it just lists search results. If I wanted to do a search, I would have done that to begin with, and on google because they keep it relatively simple. I didn’t have a problem with bing before, but they really have just been too full of themselves and in your face. The only good thing about bing was when they were featured on the Colbert Report.

What bugs me about Bing, especially with the links from MSN is the illusion that we’re linking to content, when really it’s linking to search results.

Gee, if I’d wanted to search, I would have used a *search*engine* — not an aggregator, like MSN.

    Poor design choice, MSN!

Google has served my needs well. I have not asked BING to intrude on my computer, and to try to force me to keep it there. To me, it feels like arm-twisting, or strong-arming me through an unwelcome technology. Please GET OFF MY COMPUTER!
